Read the distance and what kind of distance it is
The km tracker updates as the marker moves. The label beside the number is road path km, railway geometry km, air corridor estimate km, or geodesic km.
What happens when you generate a journey
After both places are resolved, Generate journey opens the player and walks through real work — not a fake timer. If the geometry is ready quickly, the last stage is held only briefly, then the animation plays.

YouTube travel videos
Use a window 768px or wider so the stage is 16:9. Generate the journey, play it once, then Download Video. Drop the clip at the start of a travel vlog as the route intro, then cut to your footage. Horizontal travel animation for YouTube matches that 16:9 stage.
TikTok
Generate on a phone, or narrow the browser below 768px, so the player is 9:16. That is the vertical travel route generator. Export the clip and place it as the opening seconds of a TikTok — the km tracker is already on screen.
Instagram Reels
Same 9:16 stage as TikTok. Export Image if you need a still for a cover, or Download Video for the motion. The watermark reads Made with MapRoute.org; plan your caption around the map, not over it.
Shorts and social clips
YouTube Shorts, Reels, and TikTok all want 9:16. Map Route does not export 16:9 Shorts — the phone stage is portrait. For a feed post that needs landscape, stay on desktop.

Map Route is a web-based travel map animation maker. Open it in a browser. There is no app to download.

A marker moves along the computed line. The camera frames short hops tightly and long hauls more widely, including date-line-safe paths.

What the numbers mean
Automated travel route visualization here is geography: a computed line, a labeled distance, a moving marker. These notes are the same rules the player already shows, in plain language.
How the path is generated
After you choose two places, Map Route asks a mode-specific adapter for a line. Road goes to a road router (OSRM). Rail asks a rail adapter for railway geometry. Air corridor and geodesic are calculated locally as a great-circle / straight line on the globe. The animation only plays if that adapter returns a line.
What the distance number means
It is the length of that line, in kilometres. Travelled and remaining update as the marker moves. The small label names the kind: road path km, railway geometry km, air corridor estimate km, or geodesic km. It is not duration, cost, or carbon.
Why a road route is not a straight line
A geodesic is the shortest line on the globe between the two points. A road path follows a driving network, so it bends with highways and coasts and is usually longer. If the road router cannot connect the two points, you get “No road path found,” not a fake shortcut.
What the air corridor represents
Air corridor is an estimated great-circle between the two places — a smooth arc a plane might resemble, not a filed flight route and not proof that airlines fly that city pair. The player caption says this every time.
What the railway visualization represents
When Rail succeeds, the line follows railway geometry. That does not prove a passenger train runs between the two places, and it is not a ticket. If no railway geometry is found — common on long hauls — the player offers geodesic instead of drawing a driving path and calling it a train.

What is Map Route?
Map Route is a browser-based travel map animation maker. You pick a departure, an arrival, and a visualization mode. The site then prepares a short cinematic map of the geometry between those places, with a kilometer tracker on the player.
It is a geography and content tool, not a booking desk. A drawn path is not a ticket, timetable, or proof that a bus, train, or airline operates between the two places.
Is Map Route free?
Yes. You can use Map Route without paying. Logged-out visitors can generate a journey a limited number of times. Creating a free account raises that limit and unlocks image and video download.
A paid plan exists only as a manual upgrade. There is no self-serve checkout. If you need a higher daily limit, contact the team from your account page.
Do I need to install anything?
No. Map Route runs in the browser. There is no app download and no desktop plugin. Open maproute.org, search two places, and generate a journey.
What types of journeys can I visualize?

You can search cities, regions, and countries. If road or rail geometry cannot be computed, the player says so and offers geodesic.
How is the distance calculated?
The number is the length of the line Map Route actually computed, in kilometres. The label beside the counter tells you which kind it is: road path km, railway geometry km, air corridor estimate km, or geodesic km.
It is not driving time, ticket distance, or an airline’s published mileage. A geodesic or air-corridor figure is usually shorter than a road path between the same two places because it does not follow roads.
Can I create travel videos?
You can record the journey player in the browser and download that clip to use as a travel vlog intro, YouTube opener, TikTok, Reel, or Short. The file is a capture of the map animation you just watched, including the km tracker.
It is not a full video editor and not a server-rendered HD export. You drop the file into your own editor if you need titles, voiceover, or cuts.
Can I export images and videos?
Yes, after you register and verify your email. Download Video captures the player (MP4 when the browser supports it, otherwise WebM). Export Image saves a WebP still. Both use the current player aspect — 16:9 or 9:16 — and include a Made with MapRoute.org watermark.
Logged-out visitors cannot download images or videos. Capture can fail in some browsers; if it does, the player still works and shows a notice.
Does Map Route work on phones?

Does it work on desktop?
Yes. From 768px wide upward, the stage is 16:9, which fits a YouTube or travel-vlog intro. The same generator, modes, and km tracker run in the browser on a laptop or monitor. Export uses that 16:9 stage when you download from a wide window.
How do I create an account?
Why do I need to verify my email?
An unverified account cannot log in, generate a journey, or download. Verification confirms the inbox works so usage limits and exports stay attached to a real address. Check inbox and spam, or request a new link from the verify page.
What are the usage limits?
Logged-out visitors can Generate Journey up to 3 times. They cannot download images or videos.
A verified free account gets 5 combined uses per UTC day. Generate Journey, Download Video, and Export Image each count as one use. The counter resets at the start of the next UTC day.
Paid accounts use the same combined counter. The daily cap is set when the team upgrades the account. If a paid period expires, the account is treated as free again. There is no in-app payment form.
